Here are a couple more shots, and corresponding lighting diagrams, from my recent shoot at Tip Top Photography in Birmingham with Jodie. See here for Part I.
The first shot is a nice head and shoulders of Jodie. I’ve applied a bit of skin smoothing on this using PortraitProfessional.
Here’s the lighting diagram for the above shot, or at least an approximation to it. The reflector is at the level of Jodie’s waist, just out of camera, and is actually a triflector (similar to this) rather than three separate reflectors as shown in the diagram. The key light is directly over the camera, pointing down at Jodie and is set to f/8 with the hair light set at around f/5.6 or one stop less than the key.
Second shot is in the ‘white room at Tip Top’s studio. This is a solid infinity curve, painted white avoiding using lots of paper to achieve the same effect (but does have to be emulsioned occasionally).
Here’s how that shots set up. The two lights pointing at the background are set at f/11 and the key light set to f/8. This ensures a nice white background but without any light spill back around the model.
I was relatively pleased with these images, especially given it’s the first time I’d used the OM-D in a studio setting. Like anything new it’s going to take a while to get used to the controls on the camera and it’s made me realise how important it is that you are comfortable with how your camera works when you are working with people as you really need to concentrate on them and not your camera.
