So that was 2016 and quite a year it was too! Huge political turmoil (Brexit and Trump), horrific wars (Aleppo and Yemen) and the death of a number of inspirational and influential figures (David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Prince, Zaha Hadid). Whilst there are always lots to be sad/mad about when it comes to the human condition and how we go about running our affairs there is also still lots to be glad about. Technology has and continues to improve our lives and despite what it may seem when you turn on the nightly news the world is becoming less violent. Also, as Kevin Kelly says in his book The Inevitable: “Right now, today, in 2016 is the best time to start up. There has never been a better day in the whole history of the world to invent something.”
I also happen to believe that despite the changing landscape of photography there is no better time to be a photographer. Here, in celebration of that fact, are my 12 favourite images from 2016, one from each month of the year (well apart from March for which I couldn’t make my mind up). Enjoy and a very Happy New Year.
